Congratulations David and Tom!
Every third amino acid in collagen is glycine. We asked whether non-branched glycine homologs, such as β-alanine, can replace glycine in collagen triple helices. We show that while β-alanine in the middle of CMP sequences is incompatible with triple helix formation, terminal β-alanine residues are tolerated. This paper appears in a special issue of Tetrahedron Letters in honor of Prof. Bill Morandi's 2023 Tetrahedron Young Investigator Award for Organic Synthesis.
